About Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of Argentina. Located on the western shore of the Río de la Plata, on South America’s southeastern coast, it is one of the most important political, cultural, and economic centers in the region.
The city proper is home to approximately 3 million people, with a metropolitan population exceeding 15 million, making it one of the largest urban areas in Latin America. Known for its rich European-style architecture, vibrant arts scene, and renowned culinary culture, Buenos Aires is often referred to as the “Paris of South America.”
Buenos Aires has a unique identity shaped by a history of immigration and cultural blending. The city is also the birthplace of tango, a globally celebrated music and dance genre.
The HTAi 2025 Annual Meeting venue is ideally located near two iconic neighborhoods that reflect the city’s dynamic character. To the east is Puerto Madero, a strikingly modern district known for its sleek architecture, waterfront views, and upscale restaurants. Just a short walk away lies San Telmo, one of the city’s oldest barrios, famed for its cobblestone streets, colonial charm, antique markets, and deep connection to tango and candombe traditions. Together, these neighborhoods offer a vivid glimpse into both the contemporary energy and historic soul of Buenos Aires.
Climate
Buenos Aires has a humid subtropical climate, with mild winters and hot, humid summers. In June, which is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, the average daytime temperature is around 15 °C (59 °F), with nighttime lows near 8 °C (46 °F). Rainfall is moderate, so visitors are advised to bring layers and possibly a light rain jacket.
Buenos Aires in Pop Culture
Curious to see Buenos Aires on screen or in print? The city’s striking landscapes, rich history, and social fabric have inspired countless stories. Here are just a few films and books that bring its character to life:
El Eternauta – Héctor Germán Oesterheld: First published in the 1950s and recently adapted into a new television series, this iconic Argentine graphic novel imagines a deadly snowfall blanketing Buenos Aires, transforming its familiar streets into a battleground of alien invasion and human resistance.
The Secret in Their Eyes (El secreto de sus ojos, 2009) – Juan José Campanella: Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, this gripping thriller weaves together crime, love, and memory, set against the backdrop of Buenos Aires’ courts, trains, and stadiums.
Sidewalls (Medianeras, 2011) – Gustavo Taretto: A modern romantic comedy exploring urban isolation in the digital age, with Buenos Aires’ eclectic architecture serving as both setting and symbol of disconnection.
Nine Queens (Nueve reinas, 2000) – Fabián Bielinsky: This fast-paced con film races through the heart of downtown Buenos Aires, showcasing its bustling streets, offices, and hotels in a tightly woven tale of deception.
Wild Tales (Relatos salvajes, 2014) – Damián Szifron: An acclaimed anthology of darkly comedic stories—some set in Buenos Aires—that taps into everyday frustrations and the extremes of human behavior.
Submit your topic: Closing the Gaps
A new feature of the HTAi Annual Meeting program: Closing the Gaps—a participant-driven networking and discussion session designed to surface the questions, challenges, and ideas that matter most to you. Closing the Gaps is about creating space for the conversations that may not yet be on the program agenda, but are deeply relevant to our global HTA community. This feature is derived from the HTAi Scientific Development & Capacity Building Committee’s Gaps & Needs initiative, which aims to identify critical hot topics in HTA where further attention, development, or action is needed across the global community. Your input will directly shape that work.
Through this session, we’re asking:
- What’s keeping you up at night?
- What emerging challenges or big questions do you wish more people were talking about?
- What real-time issues do you want to explore with your peers?
How It Works
- Share your idea via our simple survey tool. Include a short description and a few guiding questions.
- View submitted topics, upvote their favorites, and join a live session.
- The top 5–7 topics will become live, facilitator-led conversations during our Closing the Gaps networking session on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
- Each discussion group will include a facilitator to help guide the dialogue and capture key insights—ensuring the conversation lives beyond the meeting itself.
Why This Matters
Closing the Gaps creates space for timely, participant-led dialogue on the issues that matter most right now. It empowers attendees to shape the content of the meeting—not just absorb it—and encourages deeper, more meaningful connections among peers. As we capture the insights and outcomes from these discussions, we can carry the ideas forward to inform future HTAi programs, initiatives, and collaborations.
Whether or not you’re attending in Buenos Aires, you’re invited to contribute! Submit a topic or vote on those already proposed— your input will help guide the dialogue onsite and inform future HTAi programs and initiatives.

◤ HTAi Webinar | Sharing Hospital-Based HTA Experience in Developing Countries
Hospital-based HTA (HB-HTA) in low- and middle-income countries serves as an essential tool for improving healthcare outcomes and ensuring efficient allocation of resources. The Implementation of HB-HTA faces several challenges, such as limited financial and human resources, insufficient awareness of HTA use in hospitals and lack of adequate data. Formalizing HTA processes in hospitals can strengthen decision-making related to healthcare interventions, thereby improving patient outcomes and optimizing health expenditures. Leveraging regional collaborations and knowledge transfer of HTA applications can contribute to the efficiency and sustainability of health systems.
