2017 Christopher Henshall
Distinguished Career Award Recipient
Dr. Christopher Henshall received numerous nominations for this year’s award. As Founding President of Health Technology Assessment International (HTAi), founder and long-standing Chair of the HTAi Global and Asia Policy Forums, and dedicated Society member and leader, Dr. Henshall has contributed boundlessly to the Society.
In the course of his career in health research and innovation, Dr. Henshall has worked for the Health Promotion Research Trust and the UK Medical Research Council. He also has worked for the Department of Health and the National Health Services (NHS) in England. As Under Secretary at NHS, he was involved in establishing the NHS R&D budget, the NHS HTA Programme, and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). He has also worked at the Department of Trade and Industry, where he was responsible for UK science and innovation policy and funding; and the University of York, where, as Pro Vice Chancellor, he was responsible for promoting enterprise, innovation, and links with the economy, government, and businesses at home and overseas.
Other recent positions include the Founding President of HTAi, Chair of the HTAi Policy Forum from 2005-2007 and 2011-2016, and Chair of the HTAi Asia HTA Policy Forum from 2013-2016. Additional recent positions include Board Director of Alberta Innovates, a publicly-funded research and innovation agency in the Province of Alberta, Canada; Associate Professor in the Health Economics Research Group at Brunel University London; and Honourary Fellow at the Centre for Health Economics at the University of York (UK).
